SCHOOL OF SOCIAL SCIENCES
M.Sc Economics-Five Year Integrated Course

In emerging frontiers of global economy, Economics as discipline has emerged a great employer. Today Economists work in range of settings from corporate sector, government policy makers and market gazers to risk analyst besides teaching and research. The possibilities are enormous if the training is vigorous. Doon University seized of potential, intends to start a five year course with three streams.
Doon University is a state university of Uttarakhand, established by Doon University Bill 2005 (Uttaranchal Adhiniyam Sankhya 18 of 2005). It has been set up as a centre of excellence for the advancement and dissemination of knowledge to improve human capacity and quality of life and to promote holistic and sustainable development of the society. It is already running, School of Environment and Natural Resources, School of Communication, School of Management, School of Languages and School of Social Sciences, Many other schools and research programmes are in offing. While the former three are post-graduate courses, the school of languages offers Five-year integrated courses in Chinese, Spanish and German languages.
The Need for an Integrated Program:
The mandate of Doon University demands that the University provides quality education options to the school leaving students. The state particularly the city of Dehradun hosts a number of reputed schools drawing students from India and abroad. In the absence of good institutions of higher education, these students have no option but to go out after their schooling. Doon University is an attempt to fill the huge gap by providing a few courses in integrated mode.
Need for integrated course is also felt due to growing richness of various disciplines in terms of research and specialisation. Today, for instance Environmental & Resource Economics has emerged as vibrant field of specialisation. The changing character of disciplines is demanding a comprehensive syllabus. The five year courses are attempt in that direction. No wonder many Universities and leading institutions are moving to five year mode. Among some important ones are:
 IIT Kanpur:
 IIT Kharagpur
 IIT Madras:
 The Central University of Karnataka:
 The University of Hyderabad:
 Annamalai University
 Gandhigram Rural Institute (Deemed University), Tamil Nadu,

Doon University intends to start the five year course in Economics with three streams namely Economics, Environmental & Resource Economics and Business Economics. The reasons are obvious. The courses are so designed that in first three years will be devoted exclusively on the discipline of Economics. The courses are of honours level and students will have option to exit with honours degree. The last four semesters will have papers on advance courses and specialisation. The admission will be held on the basis of entrance test.
