Assignment-II Course: 507 Econometrics (Last Date: 23 March 2011)

Course Teacher: Siba Sankar Mohanty, School of Social Sciences, Doon University, Dehradun

The present assignment has 20% weight in the internal assessment marks I have. Please read the details in the following paragraphs carefully to complete the assignment.
"A Contribution to the Empirics of Economic Growth" is a significant contribution by Mankiw, N., Romer David and Weil David published in the Quarterly journal of Economics Vol. 107, No. 2. (May, 1992), pp. 407-437. Please click here to find the article. The article focuses on the debate on the relevance of Solow model of Growth and the Endogenous Growth theory supported by Solow's critics. Your task for the assignment is as follows.

The assignment is to be submitted in two parts

PART-1
(a) You need to provide a 1500-2000 word summary of the article in your own words with at least six more references cited on the topic other than the original article. Please remember, while I ask you to prepare a summary, your work needs to be supported by your own readings and own insights from other relevant sources as well.
Last date for submission of the first part of the assignment: 23 March 2011.
Please do not copy and paste from each other. Your assignment will be marked zero if any evidence of such copy-paste is observed. Use OXFORD Style of Referencing
PART-2
(b) You need to reproduce Table-1, Table-2, Table-3, Table-4 and table-5 with a new set of data classified into OECD and Non -OECD countries. There is no need to classify countries any further than OECD, Non-OECD and TOTAL. Please use your own judgment on the proxies in the regression analysis. Please interpret each table in your own words and present them in word format. Please mention the reasons for the differences you observe between your analysis and the findings of Mankiw, Romer and Weil.

Use World Development Indicators for the data on different countries for the years 2009-1980 or earlier.

Use GRETL for all your computational requirements. Do not use any other statistical package. You need to prepare a presentation with slides based on your analysis and present it before the class and class teachers during the students seminar (March last week).

Best Wishes,
